Sherwood High School Recognizes 24-Student Athletes
Moving  on to Play at Collegiate Level

  Warriors to Play for Division I, II and III Schools

                Sherwood High School in Montgomery County and its all-sports athletic booster organization – the Warrior Club — is recognizing more than two dozen senior student-athletes who have made commitments to play a sport at the collegiate level.  Sports ranging from fencing to football are represented by the class of 2011 sport-scholarship recipients.

“Year in and year out, Sherwood High School produces some of the finest scholar-athletes in the state of Maryland.  The Class of 2011 is no exception with 25 graduating seniors going on to compete in 10 different sports at Division I, II and III level colleges.  Sherwood’s top-notch athletic programs benefit from hard working student-athletes, a very supportive parent community and an excellent feeder system in OBGC,” said Steve Bolen, Warrior Club president.

“Sherwood student-athletes spend hours in the classroom, on ball fields, in the gym, pool and on the courts working to achieve excellence.  Their efforts are confirmed by the belief colleges and universities have in Sherwood athletes performing at the next level,” said Principal William Gregory.   

Sherwood competes at the 4A level and since 1974 has won 24 state championships, 52 regional championships, 18 county championships and 122 divisional championships. Sherwood draws students from the towns of Olney, Ashton and Brookeville. To learn more about Sherwood visit www.sherwoodptsa.org

Sherwood honors its first sports hall-of-famers

Thirteen athletes and the 1977 undefeated state championship soccer team were inducted as the first members of Sherwood High School’s newly created Athletic Hall of Fame. The inaugural Athletic Hall of Fame weekend was described by Terri Hogan in the Gazette in the following two articles:

Sherwood High School Establishes New Tradition: Athletic Hall of Fame

 October 29-30th Weekend Activities Honor 14 Inaugural Inductees including World Cup Soccer Star

(October 11, 2010, Sandy-Spring, MD) — Sherwood High School in Montgomery County, Maryland and its all-sports athletic booster organization—the Warrior Club — is establishing a new tradition for the school by founding an Athletic Hall of Fame and weekend celebration activities. The school, which has been a force in county athletics for decades, is honoring an inaugural class of 14 members who are being honored in-person and posthumously.

Events during the first Hall of Fame Weekend include recognition of inductees at the October 29th football game during half-time and on Saturday, October 30th from 6-11pm a Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony-Dinner Dance in the Washington Christian Academy Ballroom.

The inductee class includes Oguchi Onyewu who is a member of the U.S. National Soccer team, who played in the FIFA 2010 World Cup and plays professionally at AC Milan of the Italian Serie A. Other inductees are: Richie Anderson (football), Jack Bentley (baseball), Coach Tony Caruso (football), Coach Warren Crutchfield (baseball, cross country, track & field), Coach Marshall Dauberman (wrestling), Art Fennington (Community Service), Katie Jenkins (basketball, track & field), Nina Roffey (gymnastics), Charles “Pickles” Smith (baseball), Mike Smith (football, track & field), Bobby Truby (wrestling), Takisha Williams (basketball, track & field) and the 1977 Undefeated State Champion Soccer Team.

“Sherwood has a long, proud history of athletic excellence and we thought it was time to showcase our homegrown legends,” said Steve Bolen, Warrior Club president.

“My involvement with Sherwood has spanned more than 30 years and I have seen many of these athletes succeed at the high school level and then move on to do great things in their collegiate athletic careers and beyond.  We are fortunate to have such a deep talent pool to honor,” added Gene Orndorff one of the founding members of the Athletic Hall of Fame.

Sherwood competes at the 4A level and since 1974 has won 23 state championships, 50 regional championships, 16 county championships and 120 divisional championships. Sherwood is led by Principal William Gregory and draws students from the towns of Olney, Ashton and Brookeville.

SHERWOOD HIGH SCHOOL RECOGNIZES 22 STUDENT-ATHLETES AT INAUGURAL SIGNING DAY 2010 CEREMONY

WHO:   Montgomery County’s Sherwood High School, a perennial leader in Division 4A East sports programs and its booster Warrior Club, is recognizing 22 student-athletes representing nine sports, who have committed to attending Division I, II and III colleges to continue to their athletic and academic endeavors.

 WHAT:  The inaugural Athlete Signing Day 2010 Ceremony will feature brief profiles of each athlete and highlight their future school selection.

WHEN:  Wednesday, May 12th, 11–11:30 a.m.

WHERE:        Sherwood High School Gym, 300 Olney-Sandy Spring Road, Sandy Spring, MD (check-in for visitors required at front office)
