On November 1, winter season begins at our Home Builders Care Assessment Center (HBCAC) men’s emergency shelter.  Our volunteer meal program at the shelter allows us to serve three meals a day, everyday throughout the year. Last year we served over 85,000 meals. During the winter season, the number of men staying at HBCAC each night increases 80 to 200 , therefore we seek increased  donations of meals. Student Service Learning (SSL) hours are available for students who want to prepare, deliver and, if a meal is made for the entire shelter, serve meals.  We are in need of hot meals for the entire shelter on a number of evenings between October 29- February 20, but any food donation, including bagged lunches and breakfasts,  is greatly appreciated. To schedule a meal delivery date or inquire more on our meal program, please contact Naira Hirz at naira@mcch.net or 301.917.6658. We look forward hearing from you!
As a reminder, preparing meals at home for delivery to area shelters is an exception to the public place SSL guideline. SSL hours are awarded based on the number of meals delivered to the shelter. Hours are awarded on the following standard upon delivery to the shelter:
·         20 lunches or hot meals 3 hours
·         40 lunches or hot meals 4 hours
·         60 lunches or hot meals 5 hours
·         80 lunches or hot meals 6 hours
·         100 lunches or hot meals 7 hours
·         120 lunches or hot meals 8 hours
·         140 lunches or hot meals 9 hours
·         160 lunches or hot meals 10 hours
Also, below is a Home Builders Care Assessment Center informational sheet regarding the type of opportunities and the process students must follow in order to earn SSL hours.
