The pictures are scheduled through English classes and scheduled in such a way that there will not be too many classes in the Ertzman at a time. Once your student knows his or her English teacher you will be able to determine which day he/she will be photographed. Check the schedule below:

The Warrior Club Campus Clean-Up Day is this Saturday (8/28) starting at 9:00 am. We will work until about 2:00 pm. Please join us for this important community event as we prepare the campus for the start of the Fall sports season and the return of our students and staff. This year, we have a specific need for volunteers to bring small push mowers and gas powered weed wackers (email me if you can bring either of these). We also need you to bring your landscaping tools, gloves and trash bags.

We will be spreading about 25 yards of mulch on Saturday. For those who cannot join us on Saturday but would like to help in another way, consider being a mulch sponsor by buying a yard (or two) of mulch for the Warrior Club at $30 per yard. Let me know if you want to help in this way.

Note that students will earn SSL hours for this event.

Gregory

PTSA Newsletter – June 2010

Another school year seems to have flown by. The month of May brought many challenges as we balance the many demands placed on students and families. This is a time of the year that is quite chaotic in our lives as we balance the responsibilities of home, school, and work and, at the same time, prepare to bring closure to the school year. Throughout these demands, our students continue to shine in the classroom and in academic competitions. Our seniors are off to great colleges with handsome scholarships. During the past month, Sherwood students showed their fine work in music performances, art shows, science fairs, business competitions, and other accomplishments. Our women and men’s Warrior teams are having fantastic seasons.

The last day of school for students is Wednesday, June 16. We mailed information about the end of year procedures at the end of April. Our seniors will be graduating on Wednesday, June 9th. The event will be held at DAR Constitution Hall at 2:30pm. This momentous occasion celebrates the accomplishments of our students. These young men and women will leave high school prepared and excited for the next phase of their lives. This is a wonderful class and I am proud of them.

Ten juniors have been recognized for their achievement on the 2009 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. These students have met the requirements to enter the 2011 National Merit Scholarship program. Our students are among the 50,000 highest-scoring participants of 1.5 million program entrants and have been invited to participate in the College Plans Reporting Service program which refers them, at no cost, to two colleges or universities in the United States in which they are especially interested. These juniors are: Connor Campbell, Darpan Kayastha, Matthew Kinnard, Adam Kopp, Bradley Matthews, Nollan Reed, Teresa Russell, Eric Shapiro, Wyatt Shapiro and Adam Smith. The Sherwood community congratulates these students for this recognition and wishes them well as they continue towards possible naming as National Merit Program Semifinalists that will be announced in September.

This summer we are entering into a 3 year roof replacement project which will give us limited access to the building. Therefore, our summer math programs and STARS program will be held at Farquhar Middle School. For more information on the summer programs, please see our web site.

As we near the end of this school year, I want to thank you for the support you give to our students, staff, and me. Your caring about Sherwood is the greatest gift that will help us grow.

Develop A Sense Of Responsibility
June 2010

- Summer is a great time to get involved in high quality service-learning. Search the website www.mcpsssl.org to find something that will be meaningful for you.

- During the summer months when school-based SSL coordinators are not in their buildings SSL questions and requests for preapproval may be referred to Pam Meador 301-279-3454.

- Students may earn 1 SSL hour for every hour of service during the summer months. (maximum 8 hours in a 24-hour period).

- All service for which SSL hours are granted must occur in a public place under the supervision of an adult representing a nonprofit, tax exempt organization.

- Well-written reflections on MCPS Form 560-51 become part of a student’s permanent record. Taking time to write a good one is a good idea.
