Below is an email from Jeanne Taylor, MCCPTA Special Education Chair. Sherwood still has open a position for Special Education liaision. If interested or have questions regarding this position, please contact Sharon St.Pierre at stpierre619@verizon.net or at 301-774-3613. Thank you.

Dear Sherwood Parents,

It is estimated that at least 12% of the population has some type of disability. Thousands of children with special needs are served in our schools in both general education and special education
settings. In light of the above, it is imperative that we reach out to these families by recruiting Special Education Committee Chairs/Members for each PT(S)A.

For a variety of reasons, special needs families are often isolated. The PT(S)A can be a real lifeline for many.

The information below describes just some of the things that a Special Education Chair/Member can do to advocate for special families and those who serve them.

A Special Education Chairperson works within his or her school community to serve as a resource to parents, caregivers and school staff members by:

Helping parents to understand the Special Education Process and providing consideration of Special Education to the school and PTA policies, activities and plans by:

Sitting on the School PTA Executive Committee or Board

Participating on the School Improvement Plan Committee, Grading and Reporting or other PTA or Countywide sponsored Committees

Informing the school community of MCPS and other related resources by:

* Being available to school staff members and families

* Writing PTA Newsletter Articles

* Requesting funds from the school PTA to support purchases and
committee work (ex. Special Ed. Library)

* Placing materials in the designated areas, such as Resource
Center, Bulletin Boards, online listserves

* Staying abreast on news and bulletin items on various websites
such as MCPS Website www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org and MCCPTA Website http://www.mccpta.com/ and many others.

*And last but not least, facilitating family-school communication.

Thank you,

Our bylaws were recently returned to us by Maryland PTA for revision. The Bylaws Committee met and revised the necessary wording in order to resubmit to Maryland PTA. These revisions are listed below and as it is required with 30 days notice and must then be voted on by our general membership before being sent back to Maryland PTA for final approval.

Because of this development, the PTSA will hold a special meeting on TUESDAY, JUNE 3rd at 7:15 PM in the Media Center. We need a quorum of 12 people in order to take this vote. Hopefully, this will be a quick meeting so please help us by coming out and voting on the revised bylaws.

It is imperative that we vote on these changes at this special session to maintain our executive board term length changes. Please attend this meeting and vote. Below are the changes that need to voted on to the original approved bylaws .

However, if there is but one nominee for any office, election for that officer may be by voice vote. A majority vote shall be required for election. (Eliminate
entire next two sentences “The 2nd vice president shall be selected annually by the faculty. The 3rd vice resident shall be selected annually by the Student Government Association.”)

The following updates correlate with the items on the SHS action plan.   Â

SGA officers met with Ms. Wist and Ms. McKeldin and have started on a school wide project to help keep the halls clean. Â

Messages regarding school vision, mission and goals are included in the newsletter. Information is sent out to through the listserve and on the website.

Mr. Donnelly (Resource Teacher for ESOL) contacts the ESOL community with information as needed.

Each month a summary is provided to the Sherwood community.

Parents were surveyed in August and plans will be made for this next back-to-school night in September 2008.

Resource teachers are in the process of having their departments complete personalized surveys with the results to be shared with their administrators.

Instructional Leadership Team (ILT) has been trained on the use of the Pivot Table to further enhance the monitoring of data within their departments.

Summer plans will be drafted shortly.

In house survey will be investigated and possibly implemented during a window (perhaps 5/15 – 6/15).

PSAT Action Plan  Â

The progess on the plan was reviewed and two upgrades were suggested:Â Identify 10th graders with good PSAT scores and develop a plan to support their achievement before the next administration of the PSATÂ Â Create an extension of this action plan or create another action plan to focus on the academic performance of athletes.

Small Learning Communities (SLC) Action Plan   Â

PowerPoint presentation to the PTSA was shared, highlighting the gathering of data from the stakeholders and, based on these data, the recommendation to pursue four academies: Science, Engineering and Technology, Communication and Humanities, and Business Management and Finance, using the Global Studies Program as a model. The position of signature coordinator will be shared next year among four staff members and the focus of their work will be to outline the specifics for each pathway and to develop a marketing plan.

Math Action Plan High School Plus and 1A class during the spring seem to be working well. Teachers are following the curriculum but using data from the Achievement Series to customize class to meet student needs.   Two Bridge to Algebra 2 classes will be offered next year. 73 students were eligible for the course. Letters went home to parents two weeks ago and counselors have already started meeting with students. Â

Next year, both A & B sections of Algebra will be offered both semesters.

Next year one Related Math class will be given to students who may not be ready for Algebra I.Â

Literacy Action Plan Â

MAP-R testing will begin with 9th and 10th graders on April 28. A PowerPoint will be used to discuss the test with students.Â

The committee is thrilled to announce a financial windfall. We have been awarded a $500 grant by Stadler Nursery, through their Growing Gardens, Growing Minds program.THANK YOU STADLER!!! We applied and were selected after supplying information on the Courtyard projects, specifically, the Ertzman endeavor. We have had a consultation with their landscape designer who provided many suggestions and saw great potential in all of our courtyards. We are particularly delighted with this generous grant as we had already depleted our budget for the year!

The Ertzman project has proven to be more challenging than we had anticipated. There are some landscaping issues in the Ertzman courtyard that need to be addressed, beyond our expertise and way beyond our responsibilities. Specifically, drainage and tree maintenance. We have done what we can with the trees, my co-chair is very handy with a pole pruner, and we both wield a mean saw. But the 40 foot maples are a bit above us. Literally. The drainage issue should be tended to by a pro. We are trying to work with the school system to address these problems, but the process is very slow moving indeed. Perhaps spring will bring a solution.

Despite our challenges, we have a plan and work is progressing smoothly. Phase one included creating a new bed around a small circular sitting area that the Courtyard Crew plans to “floor” with paving stones. The fall brought many bargains and that planting is nearly complete. With our $500 Stadler gift card we can begin work on phase 2 and 3 when the ground warms, and our Courtyard Crew comes out of hibernation.

Once again, and we can’t say it enough, THANK YOU STADLER!!!!!

Pat Mucci & Missy Scanlon Co-chairs

The PTSA wishes to recognize the hard work of the Beautification Committee Chairs and participants. Sherwood grounds are looking great! Thank you for all your hard work!

Whereas, MCCPTA’s mission is to speak for children and without question our highest budget priority is education; Be it resolved that the MCCPTA Delegates approve the following operating budget priorities for the organization to concentrate on this budget year.
1. Staff Development and Teacher Improvement,
2. Local school based Parent Community Outreach Coordinators,
3. School Guidance Counselors,
4. Transportation,
6. Gang Prevention and Intervention, and
7. Remediation and Support for all students who need it.

Position on Draft Recommendation of the High School Final Exam Workgroup: MCCPTA does not support the draft recommendation of the High School Final Exam Workgroup, which would replace the second semester final exam in MCPS AP/IB/CIE classes with a locally developed end-of-course culminating activity/assessment that would count as 25% of the semester grade.

I wanted to thank you for being involved in the Sherwood High School PTSA and volunteering your time as an officer, committee chair and/or liaison. All of you are now a member of the Sherwood PTSA Executive Board. At the beginning of the year we have a board meeting in order to meet other board members and discuss the direction of the PTSA for this coming school year. The rest of the year we generally communicate by email as issues or concerns arise.

Our Executive Board meeting will be on Monday, September 24th from 7:30-9 PM in the Media Center. I highly encourage you to attend as important information will be discussed at this meeting. Refreshments will be provided. I look forward to meeting all of the executive board either at Back to School Night or at our Board meeting. I am excited about our upcoming school year and know the PTSA will be involved in many interesting and helpful programs and events for our school and our parents.

I’m not sure I will have much to report. The warrior club meeting was moved from next Monday to next Tuesday, because of the Redskins game. I won’t be able to attend on Tuesday. Just let people know that the first home football game is next Friday at 6:30. All direct appeal should be sent to Marianne Hamerski. Always need help in the concessions for all sporting events.

Spring Art Show – Tara Holl-Lombardi

Not anything to report for this year yet regarding the art show. However at the staff breakfast I ran into Lisa Ryan, one of SHS’s art teachers, and she informed me that the mural, that the Honors arts students and photography students did this past year in response to last year’s violence in the fall, was put up on the 23rd of August. It looks great! I am going to ask Mr. Gregory to approve a small plaque acknowledging the participating students and the reason why it was done. This was sponsored by last year’s PTSA with donations from Bonny Lundy, Lisa Ryan and myself. I will be asking the PTSA to cover the cost of the plaque unless there is a better way to go?
