College Fairs Available to Students This Month

The college fair season continues this month, with three more dates on the schedule for interested high school students. Students at many MCPS high schools will attend the Hispanic College Fair on Nov. 6 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Universities at Shady Grove Conference Center in Rockville. Students received permission slips and transportation information from their school’s College and Career Center. A parent workshop on the importance of college and information on financial aid will be offered the night before, on Nov. 5 at 7 p.m. in Building I at the Universities at Shady Grove.

The National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC) is also hosting two area college fairs. The first is set for Nov. 8 at the Washington Convention Center in Washington, D.C. from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. The second is at the Baltimore Convention Center on Nov. 12-13 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. Visit NACAC’s web site for more details, including tips for attending a college fair and questions to ask.

Meetings Set on Saving for College

With tuition costs rising faster than most salaries, paying for college is becoming increasingly difficult. Today’s average college senior is graduating with more than $20,000 of debt. In November and December, information nights for parents on the College Savings Plans of Maryland are being held at some Montgomery County schools. The meetings will begin at 7 p.m. View dates and locations at www.collegesavingsmd.org/events.cfm

Additional information nights will be held through March. The College Savings Plans of Maryland now offer more options from the State of Maryland to help make it easier to save for college. The Maryland Prepaid College Trust allows parents to lock in tomorrow’s tuition at today’s cost. The Maryland College Investment Plan offers 13 different investment portfolios managed by T.Rowe Price. Both plans are affordable, flexible, and offer state and federal tax benefits.
