National Honor Society

Sponsor: Nancy Benson

The National Honor Society was founded to promote appropriate recognition for students who reflect outstanding accomplishments in the areas of scholarship, character, leadership and service. Honor Society members are willing to use their talents and skills for the improvement of their school community.

The purpose of the National Honor Society is to create enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote leadership and to develop character.

Sherwood HS purpose is to promote academic improvement within our school community. Members are required to volunteer to tutor students at least three hours each semester. This can be done at Sherwood High School during lunch or any time at the elementary or middle school level.

Throughout the school year NHS members will commit to community service for the greater good of the community. In the past Sherwood NHS members have held a canned food drive, collected children’s books, raised money for Katrina’s Hurricane victims, and Habitat for Humanity or held a senior prom for senior citizens.

NHS member’s meet on a monthly basis, pay yearly dues and promote academic improvement within their school community.

Requirements of the National Honor Society:

Scholarship: Juniors and Seniors that hold either a cumulative grade point average of 3.7 or weighted grade point average of 4.0 are eligible to apply.

Leadership: Evidence of leadership positions and a recommendation from an advisor.

Service: Evidence of community service and participation in extracurricular activities.

Character: Evidence of good character and four recommendations for faculty.

Once selected members are expected to maintain the following in order to graduate with honors:

Maintain their required Grade Point Average. If the average is below the required average, the student may be placed on inactive status. After two quarters of inactive status, the faculty review board has the authority to remove the student from the National Honor Society as they so warrant.

Actively participate in both mandatory and volunteer NHS activities and complete 5 honor points per semester.
Maintain and uphold a good character befitting to a member of the National Honor Society and a representative of Sherwood High School.

There are no defined number of community service hours to use as a requirement to apply for NHS but there must be evidence of such because applicants are asked to get recommendations from sponsors for their leadership skills.

New applications are considered in the Fall each year, the induction this year will be on Oct.30th at 7:00 in the Ertzman Theatre. This year we will hold an induction in the Spring. Announcements will be made through Sherwood’s Web Page under the News section for parents and over morning and afternoon
